Despite a lukewarm start that led to pessimism within Disney, the blockbuster ‘Avatar: The Way of Water’ has managed to surpass the magical figure of two billion dollars in box office earnings. This was the figure director James Cameron hoped for, stating before the premiere that they needed this amount to break even on production and promotional costs.
In addition to becoming one of six films in the history of American cinema to surpass two billion in earnings, Avatar 2 is also the most-watched film of all time in Croatian cinemas. With a total of 215,889 viewers and 1.6 million euros in earnings, it surpassed the previous record held by another James Cameron blockbuster, the timeless Titanic.
Profitable Adventure
On the global market, this record is held by the first installment of Avatar, which has earned a total of 2.9 billion dollars since its premiere 13 years ago. Following it in total earnings are the films Avengers: Endgame, which grossed 2.79 billion, and Titanic with 2.19 billion dollars. Avatar: The Way of Water premiered in December, and its story takes place ten years after the events of the first part.
The plot revolves around Jake Sully, who has permanently transferred his consciousness into the body of a ‘blue-skinned’ and has become the leader of the Na’vi people. Due to the colonizers returning to Pandora, Jake has fled his home with his family and set out to explore previously unknown parts of the magical world.
This fantasy adventure reportedly cost between 350 and 400 million dollars, making it the most expensive film ever made. However, the investment has clearly paid off, as the adventure from Pandora continues to break records a full month after its premiere.
