The current rise in the cost of living worries more than nine out of ten Europeans, and nearly half of the population has already been affected, according to a survey conducted on behalf of the European Parliament.
As many as 93 percent of respondents said they are concerned about the rising cost of living, with 46 percent stating that their standard of living has already decreased, and 39 percent expect to be affected in the future.
A total of 45 percent said they are currently experiencing some or significant difficulties in living on their household income.
In December, inflation in the eurozone was 9.2 percent, reported the European Union’s statistical agency Eurostat.
Other major issues for EU citizens include poverty and social exclusion (82 percent), climate change (81 percent), the spread of war in Ukraine (81 percent), and the risk of a nuclear incident (74 percent).
Respondents said they are generally dissatisfied with what the EU and national governments have done to address the crisis.
A total of 64 percent said they are not satisfied with their national government’s response, while 56 percent are dissatisfied with measures taken at the EU level.
However, seven out of ten Europeans approve of the EU’s financial, military, and economic support for Ukraine.
The study’s results are based on more than 26,000 interviews conducted in October and November in 27 EU member states.
