Shaquille O’Neal Hosts a Spectacular New Year’s Eve Celebration in the Metaverse

Former basketball player and media star, Shaquille O’Neal, is hosting a spectacular New Year’s Eve celebration in the metaverse. The show, which will last one hour and be broadcast in a ‘loop’ all night, is called ‘The Shaq-tacular Spectacular’ and is produced by Meta in partnership with Westbrook Media, Media.Monks, and Shaq’s Jersey Legends Productions. In addition to participating in the celebration in the metaverse, users will also be able to watch it on Shaq’s profiles on Instagram and Facebook.

– We are thrilled to partner with Shaq, the Jersey Legends team, Media.Monks, and Meta, and we invite the audience to spend New Year’s Eve with their favorite performers and athletes, feeling as if they are truly in the room with them. The show brings exciting performances, laughter, and games, and we had an incredibly fun time exploring what we can do in virtual space, said Westbrook President Brad Haugen in a press release.

Virtual Celebrations

According to the organizers’ announcement, virtual visitors will be able to enjoy performances by stars such as Cardi B, Ludacris, and Lil Yachty, with appearances by former NFL player Rob Gronkowski and model Camille Kostek. In addition to guiding virtual visitors through the celebration, Shaq will perform as a DJ and host a dance competition. Although this is a celebration in the metaverse, the stars appearing will not be virtual avatars, and users will be able to enjoy the atmosphere at an ice rink, basketball court, while being entertained by an orchestra, cheerleaders, professional skaters, and basketball players…

In addition to the ambitious Meta, which continues to invest billions in building the metaverse, the potential for a spectacular celebration in virtual space is seen by the owner of One Times Square and President of Jamestown, Michael Phillips. Given that the descent of the crystal ball from the One Times Square skyscraper in New York’s Times Square is one of the most popular global rituals for welcoming the New Year, watched live by hundreds of thousands of New Yorkers and tourists, and millions via small screens, Phillips decided to organize virtual celebrations: Virtual New Year’s Eve (VNYE) and MetaFest 2023.

Through the VNYE app and website, users will be able to explore the virtual world of Times Square, play games, and livestream the New Year’s Eve celebration in New York, as well as in other countries around the world, while MetaFest will take place in Decentraland where, similar to The Shaq-tacular, DJs will perform, games will be played, and the countdown to midnight will occur. In addition to offering spectacular celebrations like those mentioned, the virtual universe allows users to organize their own virtual parties with avatar friends.
