After unveiling a new Twitter Blue logo that looks like it ‘fell’ out of the 1980s, Elon Musk announced yet another major change on the social platform. The controversial owner responded with a big ‘YES’ to rumors about increasing the allowed character count in a single post, confirming that the platform will indeed increase the character limit by 14 times – from 280 to 4000 characters.
Five years ago, then-CEO Jack Dorsey increased the limit from 140 to 280, and despite initial resistance, users quickly embraced the change.
This is not the first time Musk has stated that he would increase the character limit. Just a month ago, in response to a similar user inquiry, he tweeted that they were considering an increase, but to a thousand characters.
Three Colors
Although this decision is still not official, users are concerned that increasing the character limit to four thousand will completely change the nature of the platform. Instead of serving for posting ‘tweets’, short comments, it will practically become a community of microbloggers, a completely different type of content creator. Indeed, Musk has shown through his previous business moves that he cares little for public opinion and does not see the interest in preserving the original concept of the platform.
Alongside the confirmation of the character limit increase, news has also arrived that the Twitter Blue checkmark will no longer be limited to blue but will now include three colors – blue, gold, and gray. The blue checkmark will be awarded to users who have gone through the verification process, the gold will be intended for brands, and the gray for government officials and organizations.
The monthly subscription will cost eight dollars per month, while users of the iOS operating system (Apple) will pay slightly more, 11 dollars.
