Yesterday, the renowned economist and political scientist Vladimir Gligorov passed away. He died in Vienna at the age of 78, according to Serbian media.
Gligorov was born on September 24, 1945, in Belgrade, where he also obtained his master’s degree. He completed his doctoral studies in 1977 at the prestigious private Columbia University in New York.
He worked for some time at the University of Belgrade, and since 1994, he had been an economist at the Vienna Institute for International Economic Studies. He was an expert on the economies of the former Yugoslav countries, and in his research, he paid special attention to long-term growth in transition countries, macroeconomic analyses, and financial markets.
He was also a regular contributor to Oxford Analytics, an international consulting firm that deals with strategic analyses of global events, wrote for Wall Street Journal, and had regular columns in several daily and weekly publications in Southeast Europe.
Recently, in an interview for Lider, he commented on the current economic situation accompanied by inflation, the work of central banks, and all the current confusing economic trends. He also commented on the dependence of the Croatian economy on tourism and emphasized that Croatia could do something to revive agricultural production. He stated that it is ‘good for Croatia that it has gone through these two major crises as an EU member, and it is certainly better that from next year it will be in the eurozone because it will get a central bank, even if it is a common one, as it currently does not have one.’
Gligorov was a frequent guest at Lider’s conferences, especially at the Lider conference Day of Great Plans.
