Soon Supeus Case Study ‘SCS 2022’ at three faculties

Supeus, the Student Association for the Promotion of Energy Efficiency and Consulting, is organizing the 12th SUPEUS Case Study, which after three years, will again be held at three faculties (Af/Gf, FER, and FSB) from October 24 to 26, through three two-part workshops: architecture/construction, mechanical engineering, and electrical engineering. The announcement of the winners and the ceremonial reception will take place on Friday, October 28, 2022, at the Faculty of Architecture.

Since prior knowledge is not required, the workshops are designed so that in the first part, professors and experts will present the topic and hold lectures where participants will learn everything they need to solve the task in the second part. Students, divided into teams, will solve the task with prepared materials, instructions, and technical support from the organizers.

It is possible to apply individually (via ‘looking for a team’) or as a team (2-3 members) for one, two, or all three workshops. This year’s SCS is organized in a way that the workshops continue from one to another to encourage interdisciplinarity among students as much as possible. Regardless of how many workshops you participate in, all teams start the workshops equally.

The theme of this year’s SCS is ‘Energy Renovation of a Family House”.

Using a real example of a family house, students will become familiar with the engineering approach to energy renovation. According to the established condition, they will analyze possible measures and ultimately provide an optimal solution that will bring the subject family house to the state of a nearly zero-energy building. Students will be introduced to the computer program KI Expert Plus for energy certification of buildings and the development of projects for rational energy use and thermal protection of buildings. The idea is that each workshop works on the same project so that after the third day, i.e., after entering all the necessary data, an energy certificate is obtained. Prior knowledge is not required because the SCS is designed to bring students closer to real problems from the profession presented by top lecturers – professors and experts in their field in a block of lectures that also serve as an introduction to the task of each individual workshop, and for this reason, anyone can apply for the competition, regardless of what they study, as only good will and a desire for new knowledge are needed. Also, during the task-solving process, experts and members of the association will be available to assist if there are any uncertainties.

Finally, it should be noted that the best teams will be rewarded for the best solution during the competition, with six prizes being awarded. Three prizes will be awarded for first, second, and third place in the interdisciplinary group, i.e., those teams that will provide the best solution in all three workshops. Then, three prizes will be awarded for the best solutions for each individual workshop.

Faculty of Architecture and Civil Engineering

‘Modern Envelope’

Every hero in a story has their cloak, and so does a house in the modern battle to reduce energy consumption and CO2 emissions into the atmosphere. Join the workshop and discover how to create an optimal thermal envelope. But beware, you will receive a house with an existing envelope that requires a professional “update”, has several conditions, and wants exclusively modern materials. Is it too demanding? Not at all, with the professor, lecturer, and our help, you will succeed in giving the heroine of this SCS story a head start towards a higher energy class. Come and prove that you have the best solution!

Faculty of Mechanical Engineering and Naval Architecture

‘Efficient System’

The task we are tackling this year at the SCS is related to the heating systems of our modest house. Your goal will be to choose the most efficient heating system and determine other socio-ecological factors that may or may not impact our environment. We will also ask you for a written explanation of why you used that system, your opinion on the system’s effectiveness, and ways to improve it. We know this may seem complicated at first, but don’t worry, we have made the task fun and adaptable for everyone who comes.

‘Independent House’

Do you know what photovoltaic systems are and how they work? In this workshop, you will learn what is needed to design a solar power plant on the roof of a family house – what parts make up a solar power plant, how to properly size it, and what the initial investment and payback period are.
