Technology giants delivered significantly fewer personal computers in the third quarter due to weaker demand and supply chain issues, according to research by the specialized firm IDC.
In the period from July to September, 74.3 million personal computers were delivered, which is 15 percent less than in the same period last year, IDC announced on Monday.
The exception is Apple, whose deliveries surged by as much as 40 percent.
Deliveries of HP computers decreased by about 28 percent, Dell’s by 21 percent, and Lenovo’s by 16 percent.
Demand was “suppressed” in the third quarter as well, and the decline was mitigated by promotional activities from companies like Apple, said IDC research head Jitesh Ubrani.
“Supply also reacted to low (demand), (reflected) in fewer orders, and the only exception is Apple as their supply increased in the third quarter to compensate for lost orders due to lockdown measures in China during the second quarter,” Ubrani added.
American chipmaker AMD lowered its revenue estimate for the third quarter last week due to unexpectedly weak performance in the personal computer business and supply chain difficulties.
