Member states of the European Union have agreed on a new round of sanctions against Russia due to its aggression towards Ukraine, announced the Czech presidency on Wednesday.
– Ambassadors have reached a political agreement on new sanctions against Russia – this is a strong response from the EU to Putin’s illegal annexation of Ukrainian territory – the presidency of the country currently holding the EU presidency wrote on Twitter.
Earlier, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen proposed in the European Parliament a price cap on gas for electricity production and advocated for a joint energy procurement system in the EU.
Von der Leyen also warned that it is necessary to protect European energy infrastructure.
– The sabotage of the Nord Stream pipeline has shown how vulnerable our energy infrastructure is (…) We must be better prepared, conduct stress tests on critical infrastructure, use satellites for monitoring and detecting potential threats,” said von der Leyen.
