DHL and Formula E Award ‘Greener Together’ in South Korea for the First Time

Monica de Russis, president of the non-profit organization 'Amigos en el Camino', has been crowned the first 'global hero' of the initiative DHL and Formula E 'Greener Together'  at the Hana Bank Seoul E-Prix competition in South Korea.

This award recognizes local heroes who significantly contribute to a more sustainable and socially responsible world in which we live. The last race of this season also marked the hundredth Formula E race, which was logistically partnered with DHL.

Monica de Russis and her team of volunteers go out on the streets of Buenos Aires six days a week to provide food, hot coffee and soup, clothing, blankets, and a listening ear to the homeless. The president of the Argentine race has been helping the homeless for about ten years, providing food for over a thousand people weekly.

According to the statement, the prize money will be invested in paying for warehouse space and business base rent, as well as purchasing materials to create portable shelters or coats that can be converted into sleeping bags.

The DHL and Formula E 'Greener Together' award aims to draw attention to heroes like Monica and amplify their impact.

‒ Together with Formula E, we have found an initiative that stands out for its strong commitment ‒ said Arjan Sissing, head of the Brand Marketing Department at Deutsche Post DHL Group.

‒ Monica, who selflessly helps people in need,  with her organization „Amigos en el Camino” truly makes a difference in the world. Individuals like her, with their daily engagement and dedication, are key to the progress of all of us ‒  added Julia Palle, director of the Sustainability Department at Formula E, and one of the four judges who selected the winner.

DHL has exclusive rights to the 'Greener Together' award, selecting sustainability heroes worldwide in each country where Formula E World Championship races organized by ABB and FIA are held.

According to the statement, during the season, local heroes are recognized for their positive actions in building a more sustainable future, whether through their environmentally or socially responsible activities. Three finalists attended the Hana Bank Seoul E-Prix competition and had the opportunity to present their contributions to the four judges: Julia Palle, director of sustainability at Formula E, Ana Cabello, senior manager of partnerships at Formula E, Byungkoo Han, head of DHL Express region, South Korea and Veronica Sanchez, DHL’s senior manager of global sponsorship.

The winner received a cash prize of 10,000 euros, while both runners-up, Joshua Aquinde from Hawaii and Laurah John from Saint Lucia, were awarded 1,000 euros each.

Decarbonization of Maritime and Road Freight Transport

DHL has safely transported Formula E cars to 24 cities in 14 countries across 6 continents, having transported over 200 Formula E racing cars and batteries since the beginning of 2014. In 2022 alone, DHL transported over 415 tons of cargo, covering more than 70,000 kilometers worldwide to provide its services for Formula E competitions.

As stated in the announcement, DHL’s focus is on transport solutions that reduce environmental impact and contribute to lowering carbon emissions in Formula E races. This is achieved by using sustainable biofuels for road and maritime transport, as well as, for example, a multimodal approach to transport that maximizes efficiency.

‒ Formula E has organized 100 races in eight seasons, and together with our trusted teams and partners, we have developed the electric racing cars of the future that have raced in the heart of many of the world’s most famous cities and attracted a large and growing global fan base. With their expertise and knowledge, DHL is an important partner on this journey that helps us push the boundaries of sustainability in world-class motorsport ‒  said Jamie Reigle, CEO of Formula E.

‒ DHL has supported Formula E from the very beginning, and together they share the same goal for a better and cleaner future. We pay attention to every detail so that both teams and drivers can give their best, while race fans around the world can enjoy the experience without neglecting environmental care ‒  added Sissing.

Sustainability is a key pillar of the Deutsche Post DHL Group’s strategy. In line with its sustainability plan, the Group aims to invest 7 billion euros in environmentally friendly operations and climate-neutral logistics solutions by 2030. The funds will be invested in the purchase and development of sustainable fuels, electrification of the fleet, and the construction of new climate-friendly buildings.
