Web3 is rapidly becoming mainstream, and large tech companies are taking note. In the ‘metaverse’, there is unlimited potential that enables new types of online interaction. Several large tech companies are trying to become web3 companies, or at least making it a significant part of their business.
We list five large tech companies that are working on web3 technologies and solutions. As we will see, these are some of the biggest names in the tech world, and all of their strategies are quite unique. Many significant organizations and venture capital firms are investing heavily in web3 to avoid being left behind.
Meta
Facebook owns mainstream social networks such as WhatsApp, Instagram, and Messenger. In October, the company’s name was changed to Meta to reflect its mission of providing guidance throughout the metaverse.
Meta aims to attract billions of users. According to Statista, at least 2.87 billion individuals used Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, or Messenger daily during the second quarter of 2022. Meta views web3 as a promising path to the third generation of the internet. This is an important channel through which the company intends to manage the metaverse.
Additionally, Meta plans to incorporate affordable, lightweight headsets into its social construct. Consequently, following the rebranding, Meta invested in Oculus Quest, a physical gadget designed to expose consumers to the metaverse.
Shopify
Shopify is a Canadian company responsible for millions of online merchants. The company debuted its beta version of the NFT commerce platform in 2021. It enabled users to create (mint) and even sell collectible NFTs on several blockchains.
CEO Tobi Lutke and even the company’s president Harley Finkelstein have already expressed their enthusiasm for web3 technology.
– “I think the future of retail and commerce will happen everywhere, on every surface. It can be online, in the metaverse, AR, or VR. Maybe it’s offline in a beautiful boutique or at a large market,” Finkelstein stated in a video on Shopify’s YouTube channel.
Since 2018, Shopify has also begun integrating the ability to sell AR into its digital domain. Recent events include the acquisition of an AR-based home design company founded by the team behind Primer.
The AR sales experience aims to provide a realistic and interactive display of product goods to extend conversation costs and maintain minimal returns. Companies like Instant Pot, Allbird, and Magnolia are among the leading manufacturers using Shopify’s AR technology.
Additionally, Shopify has filed several patents for augmented reality. This includes one for a body measurement system that uses augmented reality and can suggest accurate clothing sizes.
Conversely, Shopify’s NFT program allows users to create and sell their NFT cards. The process can be done using blockchains such as Ethereum and Polygon. Unlike most other NFT marketplaces, merchants do not have to accept cryptocurrencies as payment. This means they can accept debit cards, Shop Pay, and bank cards for Shopify payments.
Twitter has its own focus on web3 and is taking tentative steps. As one of the most popular social media platforms, it could have a huge impact. It has already begun working on integrating NFTs.
