The E-Chain project, part of the Interreg V-A program, Italy – Croatia, aimed to improve connectivity and data harmonization for the Adriatic intermodal network by implementing a modular integrated software (E-Chain platform) for managing intermodal transport services in port areas for passenger transport.
The project was based on the experience of international partners in managing logistics issues in Italian and Croatian ports, on the need for standardization and informatization of procedures to achieve consistent cost savings, reduce travel times, improve transport efficiency, and consequently reduce pollutant emissions (CO2).
The total value of the project is €2,307,748.45, while the budget of the City of Split was €156,595.00, or 1,165,000.00 HRK.
The project involved 10 international partners: Municipality of Ancona (Italy), CAPT. P. AMATORI – Agenzia Marittima s.r.l. (Italy), BRUSUTTI s.r.l. (Italy), G.M.T. S.P.A. (Italy), University of Trieste (Italy), University of Rijeka, Faculty of Maritime Studies (Croatia), Prosoft d.o.o. (Croatia), Jadrolinija Rijeka (Croatia), City of Split (Croatia), CELEBES IT d.o.o. (Croatia).
The E-Chain modular platform, as one of the main results of the project, provides information through its innovative integrative solution:
- to passengers – enabling the choice of a “greener” way of traveling with lower CO2 emissions to their destinations; in transit ports, it provides up-to-date information on timetables for continuing travel, availability of parking, local transport, and other mobility options in the city, facilities available to them while waiting to continue their journey, as well as contacts for emergency and other service agencies;
- to local authorities – providing better insight into the mobility of passengers and tourists, offering valuable information for further development of new forms of mobility in the city and port area, better territorial management;
- to transport service providers – allowing better visibility of their services to passengers and tourists, integration with services of other transport entities, usage indicators of their services for better planning and capacity management;
- to tourism entities – enabling the integration of their offerings, sharing user experiences, monitoring attendance by various criteria as an incentive for creating new experiences and values for the territory.
In the city of Split, as one of three pilot locations, along with Venice and Ancona, 3 info panels with the E-Chain platform have been installed, which will offer the service of availability of harmonized data for the Adriatic intermodal network.
To better present the E-Chain modular platform, an Informative training session titled “Innovative Solutions for Promoting Sustainable Passenger Transport between Italy and Croatia” was held at the Chamber of Commerce in Split, along with a pilot presentation of the installed info panels with the E-Chain platform in the city center.

Target groups that will benefit from the results of the E-Chain project and will be able to capitalize on them:
- citizens and tourists will use the services of the project;
- local/public bodies that will implement the info-mobility system and will benefit in terms of transport efficiency, tourism;
- transport and tourism operators can join the E-Chain platform by promoting their services to clients;
- cultural and entertainment events, fairs;
- logistics carriers at the EU, international, or national level will benefit as potential future clients and will ensure capitalization and sharing of E-Chain solutions.
The area of the Interreg V-A Italy – Croatia Program is under significant traffic load and consequently, environmental impact. Certain zones of the program area show higher loads, such as urban areas, seaports, airports, and all other infrastructure nodes. Most of them are located along the coasts of Italy and Croatia and are all traffic burdened by congestion caused by seasonal tourist flows. Since both countries face common challenges and problems, only joint solutions could provide real benefits for this area.
The E-Chain project, thanks to the territorial distribution of partners, supported the specific goal of the program area, which is to improve the quality, safety, and ecological sustainability of transport through multimodality as a key element for creating maritime, coastal, and land transport services and creating safer and more environmentally sustainable transport nodes in the Adriatic Sea, and perhaps beyond through the possibility of capitalizing project solutions in some future Calls of the European Union program on sustainable mobility.
