1000 Largest: 134 Companies Had Lower Revenue Than in 2020

The average growth rate of the 1000 largest  companies in Croatia based on revenue achieved last year was close to 20 percent. In addition to companies in the energy sector, whose average growth was nearly 60 percent, a significant contribution to such a high overall average, for understandable reasons, came from the restaurant and hotel sector (growth of 95 percent) and real estate business (86 percent). On the other hand, an average decline in revenue was recorded only in the water supply and drainage activities (0.6 percent) and security and defense (0.9 percent).   This year’s list of the 1000 largest includes 134 companies that had lower revenue last year than the year before, but any comparison with 2020, in which most companies operated at a loss, is inappropriate this time.

Individually, the first company among the 1000 largest that had lower revenue in 2021 than the previous year is found only in 48th place on the ranking list. This is Zagrebački holding, whose revenue fell by 3.7 percent. Just below it is another  such case, PIK Vrbovec plus, a company from the Fortenova group,  whose revenue last year amounted to 1.83 billion kuna, or 1.7 percent less than the year before. Among the hundred largest companies, there are only two companies that failed to reach the revenues of 2020, Telemach Hrvatska (-2.1 percent) and Narodni trgovački lanac (-3.3 percent).

The company with the largest decline in revenue last year is PIK Vinkovci plus, another from the Fortenova group, which saw its revenue drop from 851 million kuna in 2020 to 463 million kuna last year.  Following it with a revenue decline of over 33 percent is Brodograđevna industrija Split, whose revenue last year amounted to 620 million kuna.  However, in neither of these two cases did the high decline in revenue lead to an increase in losses. On the contrary, PIK Vinkovci reduced its loss last year from the previous year’s 70 million kuna to ten million, while Brodosplit managed to achieve over 49 million kuna in profit even with such reduced revenue.
