Most strict isolation measures in Shanghai were lifted on Wednesday after two months. In the southern Chinese port city, home to 26 million people, isolation measures have been removed, and businesses have begun to operate. Public and private transport has also been restarted, but still with some restrictions.
In Shanghai, the economic and financial center of China, the second largest economy in the world, only 15 new coronavirus infections were reported yesterday. This is the lowest number of cases in the last three months.
At the peak of the last wave of COVID infections in April, as many as 27,000 cases were reported in one day. Nationwide, China recorded 68 cases, of which 46 were asymptomatic.
While the rest of the world is largely trying to continue living with COVID, China continues with its zero-tolerance strategy towards COVID. The emergence of the Omicron variant in China in March caused the largest spread of the virus since the beginning of the pandemic two years ago.
Chinese scientists have warned that a complete relaxation of pandemic measures in the country could lead to 1.5 million deaths over a period of six months.
