At the end of 2021, the Croatian National Bank issued and the Croatian Mint minted gold and silver coins featuring the Dalmatian dog motif. In the continuation of the series, the Dalmatian dog appears – in color!
The Croatian Mint Mints Colored Coins for the First Time
For the first time in history, the Croatian Mint has minted colored coins: a one-ounce gold coin and a five-ounce silver coin. The series is rounded off with a quarter-ounce gold coin, making a total of four gold coins and two silver coins in the complete ‘Dalmatian Dog’ series.
How Are Colored Coins Actually Made?
After the coins are minted and pass the quality control process, the coloring process begins. A special high-resolution printer with a large useful print area is used for coloring, allowing for the coloring of large series and different types of surfaces of the colored items.
The colored gold and silver coins are issued in very limited series; the gold coin comes in a series of only 101 pieces, while the silver coin is available in 500 pieces, and the quarter-ounce gold coin is available in a series of 2000 pieces.
The gold coins belong to the category of investment gold and are made of gold with a purity of 999.9/1000, while the silver coin is minted in silver with a purity of 999/1000.
These special colored coins have also earned special packaging and have found their place in boxes designed by the authors of Design Bureau Izvorka Jurić. DBIJ is a studio that has previously designed boxes for the Croatian Mint that have won multiple awards at the Pentawards, a prestigious packaging design competition. The coins themselves are packaged in capsules and are accompanied by a corresponding certificate certified by the signature of the Governor of the Croatian National Bank.

Nikola Vudrag Does Not Hide His Enthusiasm for the Colored Dalmatian
The design of each coin begins with the author’s idea. Our young sculptor Nikola Vudrag, now a world star, has translated the recognizable features of this breed into the conceptual solution, as well as parts of the geographical map of the Republic of Croatia. The spots characteristic of the Dalmatian dog represent the well-known Croatian islands, and a part of the land is also relief depicted, with sea waves in the background.
– After the initiative for the colored coin proposed by the mint, I was delighted that it was about my Dalmatian. This is the first coin in Croatia that I know of where a special type of color has been added to the relief, which perfectly matches the shades of the Dalmatian. The technical execution that the mint managed to achieve on such a small model is impressive, as it not only involves the laws of minting, with convex and concave surfaces, but also a new dimension of ‘color’ included as an added value – said Nikola.
