NFT collection of selfies by Indonesian student achieves sales exceeding one million dollars in less than a week

A student from an Indonesian university, Sultan Gustaf Al Ghozali, has created an NFT collection that has achieved a massive trading volume in just a few days.

Ghozali’s NFT collection consists of ordinary selfies he took over four years.

– I took selfies from the age of 18 to 22 (2017 – 2021). These are actually my own photos of me standing in front of the computer day after day – it says on his OpenSea profile.

However, the collection contains only 933 images, suggesting that Ghozali’s selfies do not cover every day in that time frame.

The photos were originally taken to be used in a video for the start of classes, but Ghozali later decided to convert those photos into a series of non-fungible tokens and sell them on the NFT marketplace OpenSea.

The collection is titled 'Ghozali Everyday'. It seems to reference Beeple’s 'Everydays: The First 5000 Days', an NFT that sold at Christie’s for 69 million dollars in March 2021.

Ghozali set an initial price of 3 dollars for the NFTs when he launched the collection on Sunday, January 9. Since then, the floor price for each NFT in the collection has risen to 0.4 ether (1,350 dollars).

The collection has surpassed one million dollars in trading volume. So far, it has amassed 374 ether, or over 1,100,000 dollars in sales.

The NFT collection has been promoted by Indonesian celebrity chef Arnold Poernomo, Indonesian sneaker and streetwear entrepreneur Jeffry 'Jejouw' Jouw, and various other members of the NFT community.

Poernomo stated that he and other investors participated in the purchases to help Ghozali earn additional income. He also emphasized that he not only changed Ghozali’s life by promoting the collection, as buyers who purchased the NFT at the initial price achieved a return of 78,000 percent if they sold the NFT at the current highest price.

While other NFT projects like Crypto Punks and Bored Ape Yacht Club have marketing initiatives behind them, Ghozali’s collection appears to have gained popularity organically.

Like most new NFTs, it is unclear whether it will retain its value in the long term. However, the collection is still completely new and is likely to attract numerous new investors or speculators in the coming days.
