Romina Orešković (Orbico): Controlling is always a support to business, but it becomes challenging with rapid growth

As part of the first day of Lider’s 'International Conference on Controlling in Croatia' held today in a virtual environment, a trio from Orbico Group Croatia shared their story about the challenges of controlling and the transition to group reporting within the company. Romina Orešković, Chief Financial Officer, Nikolina Bašić, controlling manager, and Leo Rupčić, BI reporting manager, together explained the process the group underwent, including the challenges they faced in implementing controlling and reporting.

Orešković emphasized that numerous companies are currently working on implementing various tools to elevate their reporting system to a better level, and in their case, the biggest challenge was that they are a company operating in different fields. Given that it is difficult to align all categories in controlling, when they prepare reports for each category, they need to have a specific solution.

For them, the complex transition process involved standardizing data, storing it, and providing a group dimension to the data as the goal was to unify all companies in the group. The obstacles they encountered included different systems, various applications, data storage systems, and even disorder among the data.

– Controlling is always a support to business, but when business grows rapidly, it becomes extremely challenging – explained Orešković.

They also highlighted the importance of timely involving management in the transition process, timely education, and working on corporate culture. Additionally, it is necessary to continuously work on improvement, which means this process never actually stops.

– We continuously work on improving the system and developing new processes. Therefore, for us, this transition process never stopped – explained Rupčić.

Bašić pointed out that the most important aspects for achieving data quality, on which Orbico constantly works, are standardization, centralization of data in one place, automation, continuous learning, and flexibility.

From Orbico’s perspective, every flexible company must adapt to the times, and the role of controlling is to give meaning to data and achieve communication with the business, that is, to provide what is needed in times of changing circumstances, and to succeed, it is necessary to rely on data.
