Billie Eilish, a 19-year-old musician and songwriter, is undoubtedly one of the most influential media stars, an icon of Generation Z, as well as a significant number of millennials. In addition to her success in the music industry (her second studio album, Happier Than Ever, reached number one on the Billboard 200), Billie is also thriving in the virtual world: she has 94.2 million followers on Instagram and 35 million on TikTok. This week, she announced the launch of her first product: a perfume simply named Eilish.
Although we can view this move from a purely entrepreneurial perspective – the singer has a great reach, and thus commercial power, the audience will perceive Billie Eilish’s perfume differently than a bunch of other celebrity scents that have flooded the market. Namely, Eilish embodies the values of an entire generation; consumers do not just want to smell like her but to be her. In fact, if we set aside her planetary popularity and incredible musical talent, they truly believe they are Billie Eilish.
Moody and uncompromising
This young star has been attracting media attention in recent months with her statements that concern not only the music industry but society as a whole, and she is particularly articulate when it comes to rights to freedom, in the broadest sense. For example, at a recent concert, she spoke about the 'shitty' Texas law that bans abortion. As a protest, she almost canceled her concert in Austin but quickly realized she did not want to do that to her audience, who are victims of the system. She then raised her middle finger in the air and urged the audience to scream with her: 'My body, my j***ing choice!'. As Alison Bringé, CMO at Launchmetrics, stated to Glossy magazine, Billie Eilish is the voice of a generation; she is relaxed, moody, and uncompromising, a complete contrast to most popular faces of today.
