The entrepreneurial environment in Croatia still acts more restrictively than stimulatively on entrepreneurial activity. Only two components – the availability and quality of physical infrastructure (telecommunications and transport) and the dynamics of the domestic market – act stimulatively on entrepreneurial activity. This was confirmed by the latest Global Entrepreneurship Monitor (GEM) research for 2019 and 2020.
The entrepreneurial environment is most limited by government policies regarding the regulatory framework, the presence of significant barriers to market entry, a low level of research transfer to the business sector, and an insufficient contribution of primary and secondary education in building the entrepreneurial competencies of young people.
– The social status of entrepreneurs in Croatia has not been at the levels it should be for years. Almost half of the respondents believe that engaging in entrepreneurship is not beneficial and does not allow for a higher status in society. A good indicator, however, is that more and more people intend to engage in entrepreneurship. However, the problem is that we simultaneously record a decline in the perception of opportunities. People would like to start a company, engage in entrepreneurship, but still do not know how – emphasized Zdenko Adrović, director of the Croatian Banking Association, at the presentation of the research results.
