Facebook, the social media giant, announced on Sunday that it will create 10,000 high-skilled jobs in the European Union over the next five years to help build the so-called metaverse.
The company is collaborating with others to develop a ‘new phase of interconnected virtual experiences using technologies such as virtual and augmented reality’, or the metaverse, stated Facebook’s head of policy and public affairs Nick Clegg.
– The metaverse has the potential to help open access to new creative, social, and economic opportunities. And Europeans will shape it from the very beginning – he added.
Clegg, a former deputy prime minister of the UK, said that the investment is ‘a vote of confidence in the strength of the European tech industry’ and emphasized that Europe is ‘extremely important to Facebook’.
– In addition to emerging tech talent, the EU also has an important role in shaping new internet rules. European policymakers are leading the effort to embed European values such as freedom of expression, privacy, transparency, and individual rights into the everyday workings of the internet – the statement noted.
The American company is under international pressure.
Former Facebook product manager Frances Haugen accused her former employer in early October of, among other things, not being transparent enough regarding potential harm.
Facebook responded that the internet network tries every day to find a balance between the rights of billions of people to freedom of expression and a safe environment for users.
Facebook recently made headlines due to a system error that led to the outage of Facebook, WhatsApp, and Instagram for about six hours.
