The South Korean drama series Squid Game is officially the most successful Netflix series of all time. In just 27 days since its launch, this dystopian work has been viewed by 111 million households, surpassing the record held by the costume drama series Bridgerton (82 million in the first 28 days). According to Reuters, even Netflix is surprised by the global success of the series, which follows contestants in a brutal game for a prize of $38 million.
Unexpected Hit
In addition to captivating viewers, it has inspired viral videos, memes, video game producers, and an audience that is acquiring distinctive red and green outfits for Halloween. Netflix will even have to pay compensation to the South Korean telecom SK Broadband, whose network maintenance costs have risen due to the enormous traffic, as well as to a Korean woman who, by unfortunate coincidence, shares the same number as a character in the series, causing her phone to ring incessantly. Netflix’s decision to produce the series script that had been sitting in a drawer for years was a brilliant business move, and the fact that they continue to invest in South Korean cinema is evidenced by their plan to invest half a billion dollars in content development in that market.
