Two burst pipes in Zagreb’s Trešnjevka have revealed the face and the underside of managing the capital city. The pipes will continue to burst. The outdated water supply network has long since shown its age, with half of the water we pay for lost somewhere along the way. It cannot be expected that the new mayor will correct all the mistakes of his predecessor overnight.
The city budget is burdened with absurd costs – such as swings that are ten times overpriced – which are just coming to light; and there is also the burden of COVID and earthquakes. However, Tomislav Tomašević has been sitting in Radić Square for almost four months now. This should have been enough time for the new city administration to come up with a roadmap: what to do with the Holding, how to resolve waste collection, what is the situation with traffic and (new) tram lines, additional bridges, a potential fast connection between the east and west, where and at what pace to build bike paths…
So far, he has only promised that 'the development of communal infrastructure will be a priority in the next period'. Drowned in the role of a mere firefighter, without proclaimed (at least) medium-term goals, Tomašević will quickly exhaust his significant electoral credibility in extinguishing the fires set by Bandić.
