The largest and fastest 5G network in Croatia has been provided by Hrvatski Telekom, which recently won the most radio frequency spectrum at a public auction. Thanks to this, as of August 12, Hrvatski Telekom has introduced gigabit speeds as the standard, allowing users across Croatia to enjoy a new era of mobile network evolution. The only prerequisite is that you have a mobile phone that supports the 5G signal and are located within the coverage area. Of the 600 locations where HT provides the 5G network, as many as 149, or one in four, operate at 3.6 GHz, enabling even greater gigabit speeds for half a million residents across 12 cities!
High speeds, greater capacities, faster response times, and the wide applicability of the 5G network will change the Internet as we know it and stimulate the creation of previously unimaginable services and products that will simplify and ease our lives, driving economic momentum in Croatia and societal development.

It’s a rainy morning. You get into your car and head to work. However, halfway there, you receive a message from home that it has started to rain, and you give approval for the blinds to be lowered. The drive is pleasant as there are no major traffic jams: drones monitor traffic, and sensors at traffic lights connected to a central system assist as well. If you decided to bike to work – air quality sensors will inform you where the least pollution is at that moment, allowing you to choose the cleanest, green route.
Welcome to a new era of smart cities where devices and sensors communicate in real-time, enabling faster, more efficient, and higher-quality public services. This is a small part of an imagined morning in a smart city based on new 5G technology that allows easier communication between devices, faster data exchange at high gigabit speeds, and excellent network response (latency). In the EU, 300 smart cities have already been declared, while Croatia currently has 40. With 5G technology, the number of smart cities and their efficiency will grow. The digitalization of city services is already happening, but 5G ensures their additional connectivity and networking into a more efficient whole.

Hrvatski Telekom has provided the largest and fastest 5G mobile network in Croatia, covering 2 million residents, with the highest gigabit speeds already available in 12 cities, creating the conditions for digitalization and strong development of these cities and increasing the efficiency of public services.
– A smart city and 5G technology will offer a whole range of new services to citizens. We will live more comfortably and move more easily through the city, aided by the Internet of Things, which will develop more robustly with 5G. This is a new paradigm where various devices from everyday life are connected to different sensors that perceive the environment and provide us with information about the world around us. For example – about air quality or traffic density. We can then use this information in real-time. We are informed about changes in the environment, receive information on our phones, and decide which street to take to work – the one where the air is currently the cleanest – explained Prof. Dr. Ivana Podnar Žarko from the Research Support Center at FER. Together with her colleagues at FER, she has just planted an urban smart garden where they are conducting an experiment growing tomatoes and peppers with the help of sensors that report changes in environmental conditions.

Hana Matanović, director of the Croatian IT company Smart Sense dedicated to the development of smart green cities, emphasizes:
– 5G allows us to cover a larger urban area with our sensors that measure air quality, thus obtaining a greater amount of data that we can manage in real-time. With 5G, we will be able to act more precisely and quickly on pollution in a specific urban area. With the 5G network, the data we collect in the field is processed faster, allowing us to react more quickly – explained Matanović.
Karlo Guštin from Ericsson Nikola Tesla believes that in order to make quality decisions about environmental preservation, a range of stakeholders must collaborate. And for that collaboration, internet speed is of great importance.
– 5G will enable devices that are key to environmental protection to communicate with each other. Users of these devices will more efficiently collect information from these systems and make informed decisions about what to do to protect the environment in the best possible way – said Guštin, adding that Ericsson Nikola Tesla has already installed a sensor on the Kupa near Ozalj that monitors basic water quality parameters, and biologists, thanks to these sensors and 5G communication, can receive information in real-time and decide how to proceed.
– We are living through the fourth industrial revolution, and artificial intelligence and robotics are its main drivers – says Prof. Dr. Bojan Jerbić, head of the Regional Center of Excellence for Robotic Technologies (CRTA) at the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering and Naval Architecture.
– With 5G, new possibilities are opening up at all levels in the city, and healthcare in a smart city is one of the most important areas of application. 5G technology will mean a lot in the development of medical robotics. With smart devices and the 5G network, you will be able to, for example, monitor your own health parameters that will be stored in central databases and analyzed in real-time. By analyzing this data, we will be able to prevent a whole range of diseases – added Jerbić.
Prof. Dr. Darko Chudy from the Department of Neurosurgery at KB Dubrava announces that a significant part of the smart city will consist of healthcare, which, with new technologies, has the opportunity to become more efficient.
– With 5G technology, more and more robots will be present in operating rooms across Croatia, working wirelessly. We will also produce these robots in our country, and they will assist in surgeries and be beneficial to the citizens of Croatia. I expect even more precise, safer, faster, and higher-quality healthcare – says Prof. Dr. Chudy.
We are at a turning point in the development of humanity. The world as we know it will never be the same again. The way we work, live, and entertain ourselves will change forever.
