BioNTech expects 15.9 billion euros in vaccine revenue this year

The German biotechnology company BioNTech has announced that its revenue more than quadrupled in the second quarter thanks to the sale of the COVID-19 vaccine, forecasting that it will reach 15.9 billion euros for the entire year.   

In the second quarter, the revenue of the German company that developed the vaccine in collaboration with the American Pfizer surged to 5.31 billion euros. In the same period last year, it amounted to 41.7 million euros.

Net profit for the period from April to June was 2.79 billion euros. The second quarter of last year ended with a loss of 88.3 million euros.

They state that together with Pfizer, by July 21 of this year, they delivered more than one billion doses of the vaccine to over 100 countries and territories worldwide and signed contracts for the delivery of approximately 2.2 billion doses.

They expect that by the end of this year, their annual vaccine production capacity will reach three billion doses, and in 2022 it should be expanded to up to four billion doses. 

They estimate that in the financial year 2021, after the delivery of the currently contracted 2.2 billion doses of the vaccine, their revenue will amount to 15.9 billion euros.

Pfizer raised its estimate of its share in this year’s vaccine sales revenue to 33.5 billion dollars. 

– To combat the pandemic that is not yet over, we are increasing the supply of our COVID-19 vaccine in over 100 countries and territories worldwide and facilitating access for low- and middle-income countries – emphasized co-founder and CEO Ugur Sahin.

The company also highlights that additional clinical trials are being conducted to obtain approvals for the vaccine in a wider range of countries and in additional population groups, including children aged six months to 11 years and healthy pregnant women.

They add that, “although the third dose of BNT 162b2 has the potential to maintain the highest level of effective protection against all variants” of the virus, including Delta, they are developing and planning to clinically test an improved version of the vaccine that targets the spike protein.

The clinical trial is expected to start by the end of the month, provided that the necessary regulatory approvals are obtained, the statement says.
