Fina: Every fifth entrepreneur operates in the trade sector

Of 139,009 entrepreneurs in 2020, 28,615 or nearly every fifth operated in the trade sector, according to data from the Financial Agency (Fina).

Following are entrepreneurs in professional, scientific, and technical activities (21,946), which accounts for 15.8 percent, construction (17,168) with a share of 12.4 percent and manufacturing (15,162) with a share of 10.9  percent of the total number of entrepreneurs.

Fina states that the analysis of annual financial reports compiled and processed according to the specified criteria has shown that for the last twenty or more years, entrepreneurs in the trade sector have dominated in number.

Among the 139,009 entrepreneurs in 2020, there were 947,874 employees, which is a decrease of 2,401 or 0.3 percent compared to 2019.

The largest number of employees was, as in previous years, in manufacturing and trade. The manufacturing sector employed 235,070 workers (24.8 percent), while trade employed 192,367 (20.3 percent), according to Fina.

Nominally, the number of workers increased the most in construction (6,345), trade (4,462), information and communication activities (2,162), and professional, scientific, and technical activities (1,806), according to Fina’s data.

The largest nominal decrease in the number of employees was in the accommodation and food service activities (11,510), manufacturing (3,483), and administrative and support service activities (2,615).

The highest revenues and expenses were generated by entrepreneurs in the trade sector (260.2 billion kuna in revenue and 250.9 billion kuna in expenses), in manufacturing (175.8 billion kuna in revenue and 167.6 billion kuna in expenses), and entrepreneurs in construction (61.7 billion kuna in revenue and 59.7 billion kuna in expenses).

According to Fina’s data, the largest decline in total revenues, compared to 2019, was recorded by entrepreneurs in the accommodation and food service activities (43.2 percent) and entrepreneurs in administrative and support service activities (36 percent).

Fina notes that the crisis caused by the COVID-19 pandemic had the greatest impact on the operations of entrepreneurs in the accommodation and food service activities, who recorded a net loss of 3.4 billion kuna, and in real estate activities, which ended 2020 with a net loss of 1.3 billion kuna.

In terms of net profit in 2020, the best entrepreneurs were in trade with 7.5 billion kuna, a decrease of 3.1 percent compared to 2019. In second place were entrepreneurs in manufacturing with 7.2 billion kuna in net profit, and third were entrepreneurs in professional, scientific, and technical activities with 3.4 billion kuna in net profit.
