The automotive brand Honda has found a new niche for its innovations – blind and visually impaired individuals. The company has developed a special navigation device – ‘In-Shoe Navigation System’, which, once attached to footwear, guides the user to their desired destination. The device is connected to an application and equipped with special sensors that vibrate to ‘indicate’ where to go.

New mission of Honda

This fantastic innovation is the work of Honda employee and their start-up Ashirase (established as part of Honda’s New Business Creation Program) Wataru China, who decided to help after a visually impaired member of his family was killed in a traffic accident. The technology he developed, Honda claims, does not interfere with the use of a cane nor does it react to stimuli from the environment such as, for example, sounds from traffic.

Customers will be able to acquire the In-Shoe Navigation System by March 2023 at the latest, and in the meantime, Honda is developing technology that assists vulnerable groups in society. For instance, last year the automotive giant produced a device called ‘Ropot’ that attaches to school backpacks and advises children on the safest route home or to school.
