Battery Instead of Sheet Metal, Concrete, and Mortar

At the Swedish University of Chalmers in collaboration with KTH – the Royal Institute of Technology, a lightweight structural battery made of carbon fibers is being developed, which is intended to be used in the design of aircraft, vehicles, and buildings, demonstrating its superiority over traditional batteries and materials.

Swedish researchers have proudly announced that they have achieved a revolutionary breakthrough in the development of a battery that can structurally function as a power source. The goal of structural batteries, also known as massless energy storage, is to significantly reduce the weight of battery-powered vehicles or other objects by integrating batteries into the structure of the objects.

The latest Swedish battery has an energy density of 24 watt-hours per kilogram compared to 60 – 90 watt-hours per kilogram for conventional lithium-ion batteries, and its stiffness is 25 gigapascals compared to about 75 gigapascals for aluminum. Scientists emphasize this as they explain that it is proof that their ‘structural battery can indeed compete with many commonly used construction materials’.
