Two days before the second round of local elections, Croatia has chosen Rafale. Thus, we have acquired 12 toys worth one billion euros, and in a very interesting arrangement. Imagine buying a used car, immediately starting to pay for it, while the seller will still drive it for a while before delivering it in three years.
An additional interesting fact is that the French planes are expected to start flying under the Croatian flag – ahead of the next parliamentary elections – so the entire long-term operation can be called a double pre-election game. Meanwhile, all ruling parties in recent years have tried to sweep under the rug the fact that we could have ordered airspace protection from NATO, without our own fleet.
Such an arrangement reportedly costs about 40 million dollars a year, so this billion euros would suffice for NATO’s air shield for the next thirty years. Without additional costs for training and paying 36 pilots, mechanics, and other personnel necessary for a combat squadron.
