Rawdah Mohamed – The First Editor of a Western Fashion Magazine with a Hijab

Rawdah Mohamed, a Somali-Norwegian model whose protest against the ban on wearing hijabs in France went viral, has been appointed editor of the first Scandinavian edition of Vogue. Mohamed thus becomes the first editor of a Western fashion magazine to proudly wear a hijab, a headscarf worn by women of the Islamic faith to cover their hair. As Mohamed announced on her Instagram profile, Vogue Scandinavia elevates the concept of inclusivity to a whole new level, creating a work environment where individuals from diverse backgrounds and cultural heritages feel valued.

– “I hope to be a cultural force for change that will learn, grow, and face all the challenges that come with this new role,” said Mohamed.

Editor Activist

This model, in April of this year, after the announcement of the hijab ban in France, posted on Instagram a photo of her palm with the words ‘Hands off my hijab’. According to the Guardian, that post quickly turned into a campaign that swept through social media – Twitter, Instagram, and TikTok. As Mohamed stated at the time, we are all invited to participate in public discourse, engage in the decision-making process, and become an influential voice in the fashion industry.

Her new role at Vogue certainly puts her in a position to expand her influence further and impact the change in perception of members of the Muslim faith, as well as other minorities. This move by Vogue’s leaders is, as she claims, a confirmation of a collective achievement in better understanding the entire world of fashion. Given that the Conde Nast group, the owner of Vogue, has been shaken by scandals related to racism, she does not see her new position as ‘correcting the wrongs of the past’ and will do her utmost to help the industry in its progress. The first issue of Vogue Scandinavia will be launched in August, and according to announcements, it will be published in print six times a year and will primarily focus on the digital world.
