PIP has launched a new product – BeeSmoke, an innovative pelletized fuel for smoke generators with added dry liquid natural supplements. The innovation is the result of three years of intensive work by the company’s owner Ivan Bračić, who says he came up with the idea twenty years ago.
– The new product, as a fuel that produces smoke through smoldering, does not harm bees because it contains sawdust and chips, which unlike previous fuels for smoke generators, do not have chemicals and adhesives. With active additives, bees are significantly calmed compared to the effect of 'ordinary' smoke, which facilitates beekeeping, especially when they are extremely restless, for example, if honey production is absent, when it is windy, or when beekeepers organize relocation. Such smoking makes it easier to unite colonies and it is safer to add a queen, thus reducing the likelihood of robbing – explains Bračić.
After smoking, the bees become saturated with honey, making them sluggish and calmer, and in this case, additionally intoxicated. The agent does not act chemically, but physically, and, moreover, Bračić continues, the parasite on the bees, the Varroa destructor mite, is also stunned by the smoke and partially released from the bees. To prevent the mites from reattaching to the bees, it is recommended to place a net or fabric on the bottom board. Bračić states that there are no restrictions on the use and dosing of PIP’s new fuel for smoke generators and emphasizes that the new product is already performing well in the market in Croatia, as well as in regional countries.
