Musk Suspends Purchase of Tesla Vehicles with Bitcoin

Elon Musk, the CEO of Tesla, has suspended the purchase of their cars using bitcoin due to concerns about climate change. The news was announced in a tweet, after which the stocks of both Tesla and bitcoin immediately fell.

– We are concerned about the increasing use of fossil fuels for 'mining' bitcoin and transactions, especially coal, which has the worst emissions of all fuels – Musk said in the tweet.

Just two months earlier, in March, Tesla announced the acceptance of cryptocurrencies as a payment method for their vehicles, but that announcement faced backlash from numerous ecologists and investors.

Bitcoin’s Climate Controversies

Namely, bitcoin is created by so-called 'miners' who compete with each other using powerful computers to solve complex mathematical puzzles. In these processes, they 'produce' new monetary units. These energy-intensive processes rely on electricity generated from fossil fuels, particularly coal. The problem, therefore, is the lack of incentive to switch from cheap fossil fuels to more expensive renewable energy sources.

According to the BBC, more than 75 percent of bitcoin 'mining' in the world comes from China. The carbon footprint of cryptocurrencies is as large as one of the 10 largest Chinese cities, all due to the use of electricity produced from fossil fuels, primarily coal.

Environment Before Cryptocurrencies

However, bitcoin advocates point out that the main financial system, with its millions of workers and computers in air-conditioned offices, also uses large amounts of electricity that is typically produced from fossil fuels.

Tesla purchased $1.5 billion worth of bitcoin, the world’s largest cryptocurrency, in February. Musk stated in a tweet that Tesla will not sell any of its bitcoin but intends to use it for transactions as soon as 'mining' shifts to the use of sustainable energy.

– Cryptocurrencies are a good idea, and we believe they have a promising future, but that cannot come at the expense of the environment – Musk added.
