REGIONALIZATION OF CORONA: Croatia’s Battle for the Off-Season in Istria and Kvarner

Croatia is currently engaged in a diplomatic corona offensive – from Prime Minister Plenković and Foreign Minister Grlić Radman to drivers in every embassy.

The strongest emitting markets, or countries from which the most tourists come to Croatia, are being particularly targeted. The thesis is that tourists in Croatia are safe from corona, meaning that only certain counties have a concerning number of infections.

They suggest to interlocutors that a regional principle be applied in assessing the risk of corona for tourists, similar to what Germany has towards Croatia and Slovenia has towards Italy. Slovenia is currently the most desirable target for change, along with Poland and the Czech Republic. From these countries and Germany, we received the most tourists in August. Hungary has already closed its border with Croatia.

What would this regionalization, or county risk map for corona, bring? It is, in fact, a battle for the tourist off-season in Istria and Kvarner. Because, of the five Adriatic counties, only these two have an epidemiological situation comparable to Germany and Slovenia, and better than Austria. Unfortunately, regionalization of corona helps less in the central and southern Adriatic.
