The Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Finance Zdravko Marić met on Thursday at Banski Dvori with the US Ambassador to Croatia Robert Kohorst, who presented the Government with a draft proposal for an Agreement between the US and the Republic of Croatia on the avoidance of double taxation, as announced by the Government.
The Agreement will provide additional legal certainty for taxpayers, especially those with dual citizenship, prevent double payment of tax obligations, and protect them from potential discriminatory practices. It will also establish mechanisms for cooperation between the tax authorities of Croatia and the US and resolve ambiguities and misunderstandings that may arise from the implementation of the Agreement, the statement said.
"The proposed Agreement is yet another confirmation of the strengthening of bilateral relations between Croatia and the US", the Government emphasized.
Following the delivery of the draft Agreement, negotiations will take place this calendar year, with the Ministry of Finance being the lead agency, the statement concludes. Appearing on RTL, Minister Marić stated that Ambassador Kohorst personally handed him the draft Agreement on the avoidance of double taxation.
This is "story" that is over two decades old, Marić reminded, thanking the American side, his colleagues in their Ministry of Finance, and the embassy in Croatia for making this progress.
"From our side, maximum efficiency can be expected in this matter, and we hope for a successful resolution of this important issue, which will facilitate both our and American entrepreneurs and citizens", said Marić.
According to data from the website of the Tax Administration, Croatia currently has signed agreements on the avoidance of double taxation with about 65 countries.
