The American media giant Walt Disney has shut down the 20th Century Fox brand, one of the most recognized names in the entertainment industry, British media reported. The film studio 20th Century Fox produced films such as Avatar and Titanic, and was established in 1935 through the merger of Twentieth Century and Fox Films, recalls the BBC.
20th Century Fox Television has its roots in 1949, and numerous well-known TV series have been created in its studios, including the Batman series, M*A*S*H, and The Simpsons. Disney’s film production history dates back to 1937, with Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. In the meantime, they became owners of Lucasfilm, the producer of the Star Wars franchise, and Marvel Studios.
Last year, Disney acquired a large portion of Fox for $71.3 billion. At the beginning of the year 20th Century Fox was renamed to 20th Century Studios, which coincided with speculation that Disney wanted to distance itself from the extremely right-wing network Fox News owned by Rupert Murdoch. The television studio 20th Century Fox Television was renamed to 20th Television, ABC Studios and ABC Signature Studios to ABC Signature, and Fox 21 Television Studios to Touchstone Television.
„The new names and logos of our studios signify a new day for ABC Signature, 20th Television, and Touchstone Television while simultaneously paying tribute to their rich history and the creative strength of the Walt Disney Company“, said Disney Television Studios President Craig Hunegs. Both 20th Century TV and films retained the well-known fanfare opening sound and spotlight logo.
Disney dominates the American media scene as the owner of the ABC network. It also competes with Netflix through its video streaming service Disney+.
