Exports in the first six months fell by 6.1 percent, while imports fell by 11.8 percent

The value of Croatian commodity exports in the first six months of this year amounted to 51.4 billion kuna, which is 6.1 percent less compared to the same period last year, while imports decreased by 11.8 percent to 83 billion kuna, according to the first data from the Croatian Bureau of Statistics (DZS) published on Friday.

The foreign trade deficit in six months amounted to 31.6 billion kuna, and the coverage of imports by exports was 61.9 percent. In the first six months, goods worth 36.1 billion kuna were exported to EU member states, three percent less than in the same period last year. Exports to non-member countries fell by 12.8 percent to 15.3 billion kuna.

The value of imported goods in the first six months from EU member states fell by 13.4 percent to 66.5 billion kuna. At the same time, the value of imports from other countries decreased by 4.6 percent to 16.5 billion kuna. Expressed in euros, Croatian commodity exports in the first six months of this year amounted to 6.8 billion euros, which is a year-on-year decline of 7.4 percent, while imports fell by 13 percent to 11.04 billion euros. The foreign trade deficit amounted to 4.2 billion euros.

In the first six months, goods worth 4.8 billion euros were exported to EU member states, which is 4.2 percent less than in the same period last year. At the same time, exports to countries outside the EU fell by 14 percent to 2.03 billion euros.

The value of imported goods from EU member states in the first six months of this year compared to the same period last year fell by 14.6 percent to 8.8 billion euros, while the value of imports into Croatia from non-EU countries fell by 15.8 percent to 2.2 billion euros.

The DZS also published other data on commodity exchange for the first five months showing that exports, expressed in kuna, fell 8.6 percent to 42.2 billion kuna, while imports fell by 14.1 percent to 68.7 billion kuna. Thus, the DZS corrected its initial data, according to which the value of Croatian commodity exports in the first five months of this year amounted to 41.9 billion kuna, which is nine percent less than in the same period last year, while imports decreased by 14.4 percent to 68.5 billion kuna.

According to other data, the foreign trade deficit in the first four months amounted to 26.5 billion kuna, and the coverage of imports by exports was 61.4 percent. Expressed in euros, exports in the first five months fell by 9.5 percent to 5.6 billion euros, while imports fell by 14.9 percent to 9.2 billion euros. The foreign trade deficit amounted to 3.5 billion euros.

Data by activity show that exports from companies in the manufacturing industry, which has the most significant share in total commodity exports, fell by 15.3 percent to 4.9 billion euros in the first five months. The most important foreign trade partners of Croatia remain Germany and Italy.
