The business of the internet giant Amazon has flourished on the wave of online shopping during the coronavirus pandemic, with its net profit nearly doubling year-on-year in the second quarter to $5.2 billion.

Sales revenue in the second quarter surged by 40 percent to $88.9 billion.

The world’s largest online retailer announced its second-quarter results on Thursday at the close of the U.S. stock market. Since the company’s results significantly exceeded analysts’ estimates, shares rose in after-hours trading.

Thanks to delivery services during the pandemic, Amazon achieved strong results even in the previous quarter.

– This was yet another very unusual quarter – said Amazon founder and CEO Jeff Bezos. He also added that the company opened over 175,000 new jobs during that time.

Amazon’s “cloud business” and web storage services also continued to perform well, although Amazon Web Services’ business grew slightly below expectations.
