Users can invite people to join ‘Messenger rooms’, including those who do not have a Facebook account, and participate in a group video call live on any profile, page, or group on the platform, the social network says. Facebook is trying to grab a piece of the video conferencing pie, which has become extremely popular due to the coronavirus pandemic. One of the most well-known is Zoom.

Other tech companies have introduced similar services to attract users, with Google’s Alphabet Inc allowing users to organize video conferences on Meet. Facebook said that starting Thursday, it is introducing the new service only in some countries on its platform and Messenger web, and that it will soon expand the service to all countries where Messenger rooms are available.

Live broadcasts on Facebook pages doubled in June compared to the previous year due to the increase in such broadcasts since March when several countries began implementing quarantines and social distancing measures to curb the spread of the coronavirus.
