Croatian Universities Receive 43 Million Kuna for Research, Development, and Innovation

Ten contracts for research, development, and innovation, which allocate approximately 43 million kuna in non-repayable funds to Croatian higher education institutions, were signed last week at the Ministry of Science and Education in Zagreb. The funds are awarded from the call for Preparing IRI infrastructure projects, co-financed by the European Regional Development Fund under the Operational Program 'Competitiveness and Cohesion 2014. – 2020.', and will enable higher education institutions to expand facilities for scientific development, finance projects, and acquire top-notch laboratory equipment.

Competitive Science

The funds will be used to create better working conditions for scientists at higher education institutions, for internationally competitive science in Croatia, but, above all, will encourage young people to continue their careers in Croatia. The Minister emphasized that there has never been more money in science than in the last three years.

The Center for Research, Development, and Innovation of the Faculty of Engineering in Slavonski Brod received a project worth 2.5 million kuna, the Center for Research and Development of Safe and Sustainable Built Environment of the Faculty of Civil Engineering at the University of Zagreb received a project worth 4.78 million kuna, and the Center for Advanced Materials and Coatings of the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering and Naval Architecture at the University of Zagreb received 1.3 million kuna for the preparation of project documentation.

Million-Dollar Projects

The Scientific Research Center of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science at 'Josip Juraj Strossmayer' University in Osijek signed a contract for a project worth 9.1 million kuna, the Croatian Catholic University received 1.1 million kuna for the scientific infrastructure project of the Institute for Complex Systems, and the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering and Naval Architecture at the University of Zagreb received 4.1 million kuna for strengthening IRI capacities in the field of energy and transport.

The Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences at the University of Zagreb received 1.8 million kuna for the establishment and equipping of the Center for Advanced Research in Social and Human Sciences, the Biomedical Research Center Šalata of the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Zagreb received 9.1 million kuna, the Scientific-Innovation Center of the University of Split received 7.9 million kuna, and the Center for Smart Urban and Rural Spaces of the Faculty of Architecture at the University of Zagreb received 1.2 million kuna for innovative urban and architectural solutions to increase energy efficiency in traditional and protected units.
