Scientifically Proven: Insufficient Intake of Foods Rich in Flavonoids Increases the Risk of Cardiovascular Diseases and Dementia!

Cardiovascular diseases, as the leading cause of death in the modern world, represent a significant public health issue both globally and in Croatia. In Europe, they account for 4.3 million deaths annually, or 48 percent of all deaths (54 percent of deaths in women and 43 percent of deaths in men).

Just under half of the deaths from cardiovascular diseases are caused by ischemic heart diseases, while about a third are due to cerebrovascular diseases.

It has been confirmed by several studies that a diet rich in flavonoids, compounds naturally found in various fruits and vegetables, as well as in red wine, dark chocolate, and green tea, reduces the risk of cognitive problems and diseases of the cardiovascular system.

The latest research, published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, showed that reduced intake of flavonoids throughout life increases the risk of dementia in old age.

The study tracked the dietary habits and flavonoid intake of participants, providing better insight into how diet affects individuals’ cognitive abilities. Participants filled out questionnaires and underwent systematic examinations, during which they were specifically tested for Alzheimer’s disease and other types of dementia. 

It was found that low intake of anthocyanins, a type of flavonoid, increases the risk of dementia by four times, while low intake of flavonols (another type of flavonoid) doubles this risk. For the purpose of prevention and health promotion, it is never too late to change habits that will positively impact health.

It would be wise to ensure sufficient intake of substances with antioxidant properties such as flavonoids, coenzyme Q10, and vitamin B1, which contribute to the preservation and normal function of the cardio and cerebrovascular systems.

Through studies of the anti-aggregatory effect on platelets, flavonoids from propolis have shown inhibition of aggregation at micromolar concentrations. There are numerous potential clinical applications of coenzyme Q10, with significant indications including cardiovascular diseases and neurodegenerative diseases (Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s disease).
