Despite the fact that 2019 was a somewhat poor year for the global automotive industry, electric car sales continued to grow. According to the latest edition of Global EV Outlook from the International Energy Agency, sales of electric passenger cars in 2019 rose to 2.1 million, bringing the total number of electric and plug-in hybrid passenger cars to 7.2 million.
China remains the largest market for electric vehicles, accounting for half of the sales last year, followed by Europe with 560 thousand and the US with around 330 thousand electric cars sold. China’s exceptional position is also reflected in the number of electric vehicles in use. According to the IEA, China accounts for 3.35 million of the total 7.2 million, which is double that of the US.
However, although these figures may seem impressive, electric cars and hybrids made up only 2.6 percent of global passenger car sales last year.

The IEA expects that electric cars will outperform the automotive industry as a whole in 2020, as sales are expected to align with last year’s total, and the global passenger car market is also expected to shrink by 15 percent due to the coronavirus pandemic.
