Purić (GP Krk): The Croatian construction sector is not capable of rebuilding Zagreb! Kamenski: Yes, but who will pay for it!

The Croatian construction sector will struggle to carry the burden of rebuilding Zagreb after the earthquake, even at a cost of 42 billion kuna. The disputed amount was first articulated on Monday at the conference 'The Future of the Construction Sector: Rebuilding Zagreb – the Croatian New Deal' by Željko Uhlir, State Secretary of the Ministry of Construction and Physical Planning, stating that this could be the estimated price for the reconstruction of the Lower Town which suffered the most in the earthquake.

Dragutin Kamenski, director and owner of Kamgrad, says that there is a construction sector in Croatia that can handle it, but it must first be clearly and precisely documented who will pay for it, at what price, and very realistic deadlines must be defined.

– If we are talking about a year, that will of course not be possible – said Kamenski, adding that first of all, good projects need to be made, and only then should speculation about the further course of reconstruction and primarily about the deadlines that need to be put in the right context be considered.

While Kamenski is somewhat optimistic, Josip Purić, director and owner of GP Krk, believes that the whole story is quite unrealistic for the Croatian construction sector as it is today.

– Sometimes you need to be honest and not speak in gloves – there is no one to do that job, there is no industry in Croatia capable of such a comprehensive project. This is not just reconstruction; this job also involves restorers, the synergy of culture and construction, which certainly puts additional pressure on deadlines as well as on price – said Purić.

Otherwise, Uhlir presented the disputed amount of 42 billion kuna, which he believes would be the cost of rebuilding the City of Zagreb, at the conference 'The Future of the Construction Sector: Rebuilding Zagreb – the Croatian New Deal' organized by Poslovni dnevnik, stating that this figure would only include 'basic reconstruction'.
