Facebook has released its biennial Community Standards Enforcement Report, which shows the number of controversial posts that the company has removed from the Facebook platform.
The report indicates that Facebook deleted a record number of posts reflecting hate speech, totaling 9.6 million posts between January and March 2020, compared to 5.7 million in the same period last year.
In the first three months of 2020, 4.7 million posts from organized groups intentionally spreading hate speech were also removed, an increase of 3 million compared to the same period last year. The significant increase in removed posts and publications is attributed to new improved image and text recognition technology, which has brought to light content that previously went ‘under the radar’.
– “We can now detect text embedded in images and videos to understand their full context” – the company explained the new improvements in detecting unwanted content on the platform, adding that they have developed ‘media matching’ technology to find content that is inappropriate for sharing and posting on the platform.
