Although the data on the number of people in Croatia who love beer suggests that the number of consumers of this beverage is declining, the industry in Croatia has no fear as the number of people who enjoy this drink is indeed growing daily. As many as 84.5 percent of Croatian citizens claim to consume this beverage, but compared to a similar survey conducted two years ago, ahead of the World Cup in football in Russia, this represents a slight decline in the number of consumers by 2.8 percent.

However, the number of those who drink beer daily has significantly increased. While in 2018, the percentage of daily consumers was 5.1 percent, today it stands at 8.8 percent. Beer is most commonly consumed several times a week, which is the consumption frequency for 36.2 percent of respondents, and this number has increased by 6.3 percent compared to the previous survey.

The largest number of surveyed citizens consume beer at home or outside of hospitality establishments, which is highlighted by more than half of them. It is interesting to compare consumer loyalty towards beers from large industrial producers and the increasingly popular small craft breweries. Industrial beer shows a better trend as the share of those who state they drink more beer from large industrial breweries has increased from 70.8 percent in 2018 to 76.2 percent in 2020, while the share of those who say they drink more beer from craft breweries has simultaneously increased from 8.9 percent to 9.4 percent.

Lager or pilsner is, as expected, by far the most popular type of beer with a share of 76.9 percent, followed by fruit-flavored lagers with 7.9 percent. Ale ranks third with 6.5 percent of loyal consumers, followed by wheat beer with 3.9 percent, dark beer with 2.8 percent, and non-alcoholic beer with a 2 percent share.

The survey was conducted in May 2020 by Ja TRGOVAC magazine and the Hendal agency on a nationally representative sample of citizens of the Republic of Croatia aged 16 and older.
