[EXCLUSIVE] Elegant, extravagant and unique: the new Porsche 911 Targa arrives on the market in August

Porsche has completed its classic trio of sports cars for this summer. 911 Targa 4 and 911 Targa 4S debut after the Coupé and Cabriolet as the third body option of the new Eleven. The pronounced feature remains the innovative, fully automatic roof system. Like the legendary original Targa model from 1965, it consists of a characteristic wide hoop, a movable roof section above the front seats, and a curved rear window, which closes or opens in 19 seconds.

The six-cylinder boxer engine with a three-liter displacement and biturbo charging means that 911 Targa 4 achieves power output of 283 kW (385 hp) and with the optional Sport Chrono package, it accelerates to 100 km/h in 4.2 seconds, which is one-tenth faster than before.

The engine in the 911 Targa 4S achieves power output of 331 kW (450 hp) and reaches 100 km/h in 3.6 seconds, which is four-tenths faster compared to its predecessor. The top speed of the 911 Targa 4 model is 289 km/h, while the 4S model reaches 304 km/h. In both models, the engines are paired with an eight-speed transmission and intelligent all-wheel drive, and the 911 Targa 4S model can also be ordered with a newly developed 7-speed manual transmission including the Sport Chrono package.

New technologies further expand the range of offerings for both models, as for the first time, Porsche InnoDrive is available, including a distance-maintaining cruise control. With the developed Smartlift function, it can be programmed to increase ground clearance for everyday needs. These options are complemented by extensive equipment from Porsche Tequipment and new customization possibilities from Porsche Exclusive Manufaktur.

Like the 911 Carrera models, both variants of the 911 Targa benefit from the increased power of the strong three-liter six-cylinder boxer engines. This contributes to performance and practicality in everyday use.

In the new 911 Targa models, the electronically controlled variable damping system PASM (Porsche Active Suspension Management) is standard equipment. The damping characteristics automatically adjust for driving comfort and handling to the specific driving situation and feature two manually adjustable diagrams.

Porsche Torque Vectoring Plus (PTV Plus), including an electronically controlled rear axle differential lock with fully variable torque distribution, is also standard equipment for the Targa 4S model and is optionally available for the Targa 4 model. Like other eighth-generation Porsche 911 models, Targa models come standard with Porsche Wet Mode. Sensors in the front wheel housings detect wet pavement. In this case, the driver is advised via signals in the cockpit to manually switch to Wet Mode. This way, the immediate response of the drive is adjusted to ensure maximum driving stability.

The exterior of the 911 Targa model features design elements from the 992 generation. At the front, the body is marked by significantly more pronounced wheel housings compared to the previous model. Between the LED lights, the front hood adopts the design of the first generations of the 911. At the rear of the vehicle, a wider rear spoiler dominates, which can be variably extended. With the exception of the front and rear parts, the entire exterior trim is made of aluminum. The interior corresponds to the 911 Carrera models and is characterized by clear and straight lines of the dashboard with a recessed instrument level. It is evident that the design of the Targa was inspired by the Eleven from the 70s.

In addition to the tachometer, which is typically Porsche and located in the center, two thin frameless free-form displays expand the information displays for the driver. Below the 10.9-inch central display for Porsche Communication Management (PCM), there is a compact switch unit with five buttons for direct access to important vehicle functions. PCM includes online navigation based on cloud-stored data and the Connect Plus system as standard.

The 1965 model 911 Targa was a precursor to the new vehicle concept. Initially, the Targa was sold as a “safety convertible with a protective arch in case of overturning.” However, the vehicle with a removable roof soon established itself as a standalone concept and developed into a style icon. With the 911 Targa model, Porsche connects two worlds to this day: the advantages of “driving with an open roof” in the Cabriolet are combined with the everyday comfort and safety of the Coupé.

The new 911 Targa models will be available on the market from August 2020. The price for Croatia is not yet known.
