The Croatian Institute of Public Health (HZJZ) has published recommendations for the operation of hotels and renters, as well as camps and marinas, along with a series of general rules regarding physical distancing of 1.5 meters, hygiene and protective measures, and rules for receptions, pools, etc.
The recommendations for hotels and renters contain a series of general rules and conditions for these spaces, primarily adherence to the measures of physical distancing of 1.5 meters in relation to other visitors, except when it concerns members of the same family or group.
For camps and marinas, it is specified that the respect for physical distancing of 1.5 meters applies throughout the camp/marina area (at the reception, tables in catering facilities, on beaches, e.g., sun loungers, umbrellas, in queues in front of bars, shops, kiosks, ice cream fridges, etc.). In all areas where there are seating places or sun loungers or umbrellas, they should be arranged in such a way that they are 1.5 meters apart, and it is necessary to respect the rules regarding the maximum number of allowed persons in enclosed spaces (facilities, official vehicles of the camp/marina, children in mini clubs, sports and recreational facilities, etc.) according to defined criteria, as specified for camps/marinas.

Disinfectants, disposable paper towels, visible notices
Hotels, camps, and marinas are recommended to place sufficient dispensers with disinfectant at the entrances to hotel or enclosed spaces (e.g., lobbies, receptions, sports and recreational facilities, payment paths, etc.) and workspaces for employees, ensure protective equipment for employees entering guest rooms (e.g., housekeepers, etc.), and provide a sufficient quantity of disposable paper towels, other disposable materials, cleaning, washing, and disinfection agents and equipment, etc.
Visible notices and informing guests about hygiene procedures, protective measures are also necessary, perhaps placing an informational leaflet in the accommodation unit or providing it upon check-in at the camp/marina, as well as the phone number of the responsible person who further contacts health institutions in case of suspected Covid, etc.
Receptions – check-in/check-out in less than 15 minutes…
Rules are prescribed for receptions, lobbies, and other public spaces, which should be regularly ventilated, frequently disinfected (e.g., every hour, and the reception area and check-out area even more frequently).
Physical distancing should also be maintained at the reception, and the duration of check-in/check-out should be reduced to less than 15 minutes (which is the definition of close contact), and if this is not possible, partitions (made of plexiglass or similar) should be installed, epidemiologists suggest.
The use of technology is also recommended, emphasizing online check-in/booking and check-in from home, with the option of finding direct check-in possibilities for guests on eVisitor, as well as the application of contactless or advance payment, self-scanning of documents, etc.
Guests are also advised to announce their check-out so that their bill can be prepared and to avoid delays at the reception, as well as to conduct currency exchange and cash withdrawals at ATMs if possible.
It is also recommended that safety instructions be placed in elevators, including the maximum number of guests in front of and in the elevator.
Replace hand dryers with paper towels
Epidemiologists also request enhanced cleaning of public sanitary facilities (at least every two hours, and more frequently if necessary), as well as limiting simultaneous use of sanitary facilities according to size and prescribed sanitary conditions, etc.
In addition to regular checks of soap and disinfectant dispensers, it is recommended that hand dryers be replaced with disposable paper towels.
HZJZ emphasizes the need for disinfecting tables and equipment in business centers/conference rooms, as well as maintaining physical distancing in those spaces, using children’s facilities, shops, and catering facilities according to the recommendations for those facilities and objects that have already been published.
However, the recommendations for catering facilities within camps or marinas are more detailed, covering work organization, limitations on the total number of visitors, food preparation, serving on terraces, drive-ins, etc.
Room cleaning, changing bed linens and towels…
Special recommendations for accommodation units in hotels allow for the frequency of cleaning and changing bed linens and towels to be adjusted to guest requests, e.g., only upon arrival/departure, or similar.
All surfaces and items used by guests, from furniture to phones and remote controls, should be cleaned, and special attention should be paid to cleaning bathrooms during guest changes, always separating clean and dirty linens and towels.
If possible, organize two-shift work
Special recommendations apply to hotel staff, including general protective measures, such as avoiding close contact with individuals showing symptoms of elevated temperature, cough, and/or difficulty breathing, avoiding handshakes and close conversations, maintaining social distance, hand washing or using disinfectants, daily temperature measurement, etc.
It is also recommended, if possible, to organize two-shift work, with an hour gap between the two shifts to allow for cleaning and disinfection of surfaces.
Camps and marinas are recommended to operate with a reduced number of staff (as needed, depending on occupancy), as well as to divide staff into shifts and avoid meeting during shift changes.
Pool maintenance, ventilation, no wet saunas…
Recommendations regarding technical services and maintenance include the usual maintenance of hygienic conditions of pool water, with possible application of maximum allowed chlorine concentrations.
Equipment for washing dishes and laundry should be checked, and for HVAC systems, special attention should be paid to checking the condition of filters and maintaining proper air exchange rates in enclosed spaces, as well as checking the proper functioning of ventilation equipment, air exchange, and dehumidification of covered pools. Enhanced ventilation of hotel spaces is recommended, e.g., by increasing the number of ventilations, increasing the percentage of outdoor air circulating in the system.
At pools and beaches, sun loungers should be separated to ensure distance from others, except when it concerns members of the same family, and they should be disinfected several times a day, and necessarily if one guest no longer uses it, and another wishes to. For the use of wellness and saunas, it is recommended to limit the number of persons, especially in enclosed facilities and spaces, according to available space.
Epidemiologists also recommend that all wet saunas be taken out of service, while dry saunas, such as Finnish saunas, continue to be used.
The arrival of collaborating staff, e.g., technicians, couriers, delivery personnel, should be organized with a phone announcement and temperature measurement before arrival.
HZJZ has also published recommendations for travel agencies, which relate to both the offices themselves and the protection of employees and clients, as well as the transportation of passengers organized by the agency by buses, personal vehicles, or vans, excursions by tourist boats, as well as for tour leaders and tourist guides.
