DZS: 158 Thousand Business Entities Active in Croatia

At the end of June, there were 256,446 registered business entities in Croatia, of which 61.6 percent or 158,060 were active, and nearly one-third of them were in Zagreb, according to data from the Croatian Bureau of Statistics.

Of the total number of registered entities, the majority were companies, 185,121, of which 125,307 or 67.7 percent were active.

There were 67,816 institutions, bodies, associations, and organizations, of which 31,780 or 46.9 percent were active. There were 3,509 registered cooperatives, with 973 active. At the end of June, there were also 83,339 entities operating in crafts and freelance professions in Croatia.

Data on the structure of business entities by activity show that more than half of the registered and active entities are represented in four areas of activity – wholesale and retail trade; repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles, with a share of registered at 18.8 percent and active at 18.6 percent, manufacturing industry, with a share of registered at 7.9 percent and active at 9 percent, then professional, scientific, and technical activities, with a share of registered at 10.2 percent and active at 12.5 percent, and other service activities, with a share of registered at 17.8 percent and active at 13.5 percent.

The majority of active legal entities are privately owned, 123,601, which constitutes 78.2 percent of the total number.

Among active legal entities, the majority are companies with between one and nine employees – 71,704, while 71,001 entities have no employees. Furthermore, 11,645 have between 10 and 49 employees, 3,147 have between 50 and 249 employees, 306 entities have between 250 and 449 employees, and 257 have 500 or more.

In the structure of companies, the form of limited liability companies predominates, with 142,346 registered and 93,372 active, according to DZS data.

By number, the second form is the simple limited liability company, with 40,055 registered and 30,273 active.

Data on the territorial distribution of registered legal entities at the county level show that just under one-third of registered legal entities are located in the City of Zagreb, followed by the Split-Dalmatia County, with 10.4 percent.
