Obersnel suspends the head of department who drove drunk and caused an accident

Rijeka Mayor Vojko Obersnel expressed condolences on Thursday to the family and friends of the driver who died last night on the Istrian Y and announced that the head of the Department of Sports and Technical Culture of the City of Rijeka, Vera Begić Blečić, who apparently caused the accident under the influence of alcohol, will be suspended until the official conclusion of the investigation.

“When the investigation and any other official procedures are completed, depending on the results of the investigation and the mentioned procedures, I will take further steps,” said Obersnel.

“First of all, I want to express my condolences to the family and friends of the deceased and wish a swift and complete recovery to the injured persons in the horrific accident that occurred last night in Istria. A life was lost in the accident, and the lives of those close to the deceased have been irrevocably changed, and I am deeply sorry for everything that happened,” stated Obersnel, emphasizing that everything he knows about the accident he learned from the media and that he currently has no official information.

“However, apparently, the accident was caused by the driver of the car with Rijeka registration plates, namely the head of the Department of Sports and Technical Culture of the City of Rijeka, Vera Begić Blečić, under the influence of alcohol. Therefore, she will be suspended from her position as head of department until the official conclusion of the investigation,” emphasized Obersnel, once again expressing deep regret for everything that happened.

In the serious traffic accident that occurred around midnight on the Istrian Y, one person died, and three people were lightly injured. The accident happened around 11:55 PM when a 36-year-old female driver, under the influence of alcohol at 1.81 per mille, was driving a Peugeot car with Rijeka registration plates in the opposite direction on the Nova Vas – Višnjan highway.

In a blind curve, the driver hit the left side mirror of a Škoda car with Slovenian registration plates, driven by a 31-year-old Slovenian citizen coming from the opposite direction. She then continued driving in the opposite direction towards the Mirna bridge and hit the guardrail with the front of her vehicle. The car bounced off the guardrail and hit the front of a Peugeot with Pula registration plates, driven by a 41-year-old man coming from the opposite direction. Due to the force of the impact, the vehicle with Pula registration plates overturned on its side, while the vehicle with Rijeka registration plates hit the guardrail.

Due to the injuries sustained, the 41-year-old driver died at the scene of the accident, while his passengers, a 38-year-old woman and a child, were transported to Rijeka hospital, and the 36-year-old female driver of the Peugeot with Rijeka registration plates also sustained minor injuries.
