350 American Media Outlets Stand Against Trump – Freedom for the Press!

More than 350 American media outlets will publish editorials on Thursday addressing the attacks by U.S. President Donald Trump on press freedom after the Boston Globe called for a national campaign of this kind.

The American president frequently labels articles that are critical of him or convey information that harms him in some way as ‘fake news’, while he has repeatedly referred to the media as ‘enemies of the people’.

“The replacement of free media with state-controlled media has always been the first principle of any corrupt regime to rule a country,” wrote the Globe.

The New York Times, which published its editorial on Wednesday like many others, emphasized that “insisting that truths you dislike are ‘fake news’ is dangerous to the vitality of democracy”.

“Any labeling of journalists as ‘enemies of the people’ is dangerous, period,” the paper states.

In early August, White House spokeswoman Sarah Sanders refused to answer the question of whether she believes the media are enemies of the people.

“The media continue their verbal assault on the president and everyone in this administration. Certainly, we have a role to play, and the media also have their role to play in this country,” she said.

Trump’s daughter Ivanka Trump stated that she does not share her father’s views. “No. I do not believe that the media are enemies of the people,” she said.

According to media reports, the London Guardian also joined in the condemnation, writing that “Trump is the first president who, it seems, is pursuing a policy of undermining and even endangering the work of the media.”
