Turkey raised tariffs on American sports cars to 120 percent on Wednesday, on some alcoholic beverages to 140 percent, on tobacco to 60 percent, as well as on rice and some cosmetic products.

This is a response to a similar measure taken by Washington amid tensions between the two countries.
“Tariffs on the import of certain products have increased reciprocally in response to arbitrary attacks by the American administration on our economy,” wrote Turkish Vice President Fuat Oktay in a tweet.

The increase in customs duties on imports was announced by a decree signed by President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and published in the official gazette.
According to the Turkish state news agency Anadolu, these new rates represent a doubling of the previous tariffs.

The decision comes at a time when relations between Ankara and Washington are at their lowest due to the 1.5-year detention of an American pastor in Turkey, currently under house arrest.
