Temperatures in the Northern Hemisphere have been extremely high in recent weeks, and for many people, the heat and abundant sunlight can be a recipe for headaches.

The German Headache Institute, an internet platform dedicated to providing information on this issue, has published five tips on how to prevent them.

Wear sunglasses Intense sunlight irritates the brain’s nerves. This can cause headaches and can also trigger migraines. Therefore, wearing glasses is advisable. It is also important to wear a hat or cap to protect the blood vessels and nerves on the forehead.

Water and salty snacks When we sweat, our body loses fluids and important minerals. Blood flow to the skin increases, and blood pressure decreases, causing headaches in some people. Additionally, when it is hot, it is recommended to drink at least one liter more water than is normally consumed daily. Snacking on salty snacks, such as sticks, helps replenish the lost minerals.

Acclimatization A significant temperature difference between the outside air and that of air-conditioned indoor spaces can be a potential trigger for headaches. If the difference is greater than five degrees, it is recommended to wear an additional layer of clothing to keep warm until your body acclimatizes to the lower temperatures.

Less perfume and scented lotions We perceive scents better when it is hot, so people who suffer from migraines will be additionally sensitive to this. Keep in mind to choose unscented lotions.

Sip cold drinks more slowly Something very cold in your mouth can be responsible for the so-called ”brain freeze” or ice cream headache. Therefore, cold food and drinks should be consumed more slowly.
