Fake Game on Facebook as a Cover for Personal Data Theft

Internet fraud is becoming increasingly diverse, as confirmed by the recent occurrence noticed by the Požega-Slavonia police, which involves a fake lottery on Facebook where organizers ask participants to provide personal data in order to send them an alleged prize.

The Požega-Slavonia police reported on Monday that in the past few days they received several complaints from citizens who participated in a lottery via Facebook and then received a message on Messenger stating that they were the ‘lucky winners’ and needed to send photographs of their ID cards so that the organizers could obtain their data and send them the prize.

However, as the prize did not arrive at their address and the organizers of the alleged lottery did not contact them, they realized that they might have become victims of some kind of fraud and reported the case to the police.

So far, the police have received three complaints, and it has not been recorded that the perpetrators received any payments or that anyone misused their personal data, but the possibility that this may happen is not excluded.

Given the advancement of technology and the possibilities of various forms of communication via the internet, the police warn citizens that internet fraud is becoming increasingly diverse and urge them not to fall for various ‘lotteries’ on social media, nor to provide personal data to unknown individuals, and if they believe they are dealing with fraud or any other unlawful behavior, to report the incident to number 192.
